Overview
Plex Mobile allows shop floor users to (ZPL) labels directly from mobile devices to IP-enabled printers. This guide outlines how to configure default and override printer settings to streamline label workflows.
Requirements
Before beginning setup, ensure the following:
- A Zebra-compatible printer that supports ZPL and IP printing
- Plex Mobile installed and accessible on your device
- Access to the "Physical Printers" screen in Plex
- Access to the "User Default Physical Printer" screen in Plex
Note: Bluetooth printing is not supported in Plex Mobile. Only IP-based printing is available.
Step 1: Add and Configure a Physical Printer
To make a printer available for Plex Mobile label printing:
- Navigate to the Physical Printers screen in Plex.
- Click Add on the Action Bar to create a new printer record.
- Fill in the following fields:
- Printer Name: Choose a clear, recognizable name (e.g., “PackingStation_Zebra01”).
- IP Address: Enter the static IP address of the printer.
- Port: Use port
9100
for ZPL-compatible printers. - Printer Type: Select a type that supports ZPL output.
- Status: Set to Active.
- Click OK to save the printer configuration.
Optional: You may also assign printers to specific workcenters or locations for better routing and visibility.
Step 2: Assign a Default Printer to a User
Setting a default printer ensures labels are routed automatically without manual selection.
- Open the User Default Physical Printer screen.
- Search for the employee by name.
- Select the employee from the results grid.
- Click Edit on the Action Bar.
- In the Default Printer Detail screen, assign the desired printer.
- Click OK to save.
Note: Default printers are tied to users, not devices. This allows consistent printing across multiple endpoints.
Step 3: Override the Default Printer (Session-Based)
Use this option when a user needs to print to a different printer temporarily.
- On the Mobile Home screen, open the menu.
- Select Label Printer Setup.
- Choose the Override Printer option.
- View available printers.
- Select the desired printer.
Note: This override lasts only for the current session and does not change the user’s default printer.
Step 4: Print a Label
Once configured:
- Navigate to the screen where label printing is available.
- Tap the Print button at th bottom.
- The label will be sent to the configured printer.
Reminder: Only ZPL labels are compatible with Plex Mobile.
