Why Can’t I? - Tool to help diagnose application or screen issues in Plex UX

Overview

The Why Can’t I? menu node in Plex UX is  a self-service diagnostic tool in the Unified UX menu. It helps identify why a user cannot see or access a specific application or screen.

This feature is an established part of the Unified UX menu structure and has been available for more than a decade. It is not a recently added or unintended menu item.

Purpose

The tool was originally developed as an internal troubleshooting aid for investigating access issues. It provides visibility into conditions that may affect whether a user can access a particular application or screen, including:

  • Security settings
  • User permissions
  • Assigned roles
  • Application or screen configuration
  • Other access-related conditions

The tool is also available to customers and administrators so they can diagnose common access issues without contacting Support for every scenario.

When to Use It

Use Why Can’t I? when a user:

  • Cannot see an expected application or screen
  • Cannot open a screen that should be available
  • Reports that another user has access to functionality they cannot access
  • Needs help identifying a role, permission, or security-related issue
  • Requires an explanation for why a specific UX function is unavailable

Procedure

  1. Select the user experiencing the access issue.
  2. Select the application or screen the user is attempting to access.
  3. Run the Why Can’t I? diagnostic.
  4. Review the results.
  5. Use the identified conditions to investigate the user’s roles, permissions, security settings, and related configuration.
  6. Correct the applicable access configuration, if appropriate.
  7. Have the user retry the application or screen.

Results

The results identify access-related conditions that may be preventing the user from viewing or using the selected functionality. Use the information as a starting point for further investigation.

The diagnostic does not necessarily change access automatically. Any required changes to roles, permissions, security settings, or configuration must be made through the appropriate administrative process.

Summary

Why Can’t I? is a self-service diagnostic tool for investigating Unified UX access issues. It helps users and administrators understand how security settings, permissions, roles, and configuration may affect access to a specific application or screen.
